THE OWU MONTHLY SEPTEMBER
A WORD FROM THE DEPUTY VICE CHANCELLOR
On behalf of the academic staff and faculty, I would like to offer some words of encouragement as we begin our final and most important semester of your studies. My hope is they will bolster your inspiration and motivate you as learners and as artists.
American visual artist, filmmaker, and producer Andy Warhol echoed Marshall McLuhan in saying, “Art is anything you can get away with.”
This encourages us to experiment with our creativity; to push the boundaries of conception and to take risks for the sake of our art. But in art there must exist balance, and it was the incomparable Spanish painter, sculptor, and theatre designer Pablo Picasso who said, “Action is the foundational key to all success.”
This encourages us to take responsibility for our own success, and move when stagnation threatens!
In keeping with these sentiments from two immense artists, let us be the risk-taker in Warhol, and also the pragmatist in Picasso. Let’s turn in assignments on time, attend class, and be punctual, all out of a respect for others, and for the art we create. In this last stretch of the year, when we’re working on our portfolios and projects, let’s stay well ahead of that last minute. If we’re able to do this, we will achieve the success we seek.
Wishing you all the best of luck!
Dr. Andrew M. Mulenga
