The Open Window University is the only higher education institution dedicated to the creative arts and its related disciplines in Zambia.

THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE

About us

The Research Institute is the research centre of the Open Window University, based in Lusaka, Zambia. It recognises the importance of creative arts practice and the variety of forms the exposition of creative arts research can take across a diverse range of specialisations, cross-over disciplines, and research methodologies. To this effect, we support research at the Open Window University and our partner institutions across Africa in the Creative Arts, Marketing, and Information Communication Technologies.

Research

The Research Institute supports the development of postgraduate qualifications, collaborative research enquiry, and funding, and serves as a bridge between academic and industry practice. We focus our research on the cross-pollination of the arts across other disciplines within Africa and abroad. We also advocate the value of creative thinking and practice within society.

Our specialist research area ASRA – ‘African Story Ritual & Artefact’ introduces critical and analytical categories to provide a multi-layered framework that allows active interrogation and engagement with what it means to be African through art and technology research and practice.

Research Culture

The Research Institute represents a critical, collaborative, and creative community in which visiting professors, resident and invited researchers, post-grad students, and lecturers join in addressing urgent and emergent questions. We approach creative arts research as a transformative practice to create a world of meaningful and ethical possibilities for Africa and beyond. We aspire to work with partners across the globe to deepen this enquiry and make it available through digital platforms, publications, symposiums, festivals, and workshops.
