Project Description: “Scientist.” That is my-self description paraded in my social bio’s. Not because I’m learned in any field of science, but because I’m curious about the science of things. My work is simply the offspring of all those special collisions, which is why I’m a notoriously slow storyteller who takes time to complete his work. My Fine Art project is a portrayal that frames a young black man in a sense of prestige, esteem and repute, in an approach somewhat reminiscent of the art renaissance era. My approach captures the softness and poses by attempting to strike a harmonious balance between classical and early christian ideas, but showcased through a black lens. Black empowerment has been my primary artistic concern, as well as representing and celebrating the African diaspora. My message is to build a sense of harmony between the struggling dichotomies, not to construct an ideal or just to emulate. I’m enthralled by the flawless composition and skill of the Renaissance painters, but my passion is dampened by its representation of white hierarchy and the idealization of divinity as strictly white figures, that advocated Eurocentric standards of beauty. This project serves to heal and encourage self-love in honour of my ancestors. The rich hues of the figures’ skin are astounding, made even more prominent by the low exposure. I attempt to call into question the status of Black people in the world while also highlighting the principles of the Black Movement. I hope it calls for a surplus of acceptance in the parts of themselves that black people have been taught to despise, while also giving them the room to recover.
