A Milestone Moment for Open Window University
Open Window University recently marked a proud milestone with the graduation of its very first cohort of degree students. The ceremony was a moment of joy and recognition for the hard work and dedication of these pioneering graduates.
Representing the Minister of Education, Hon. Douglas Syakalima, the Acting Permanent Secretary of Administration, Mr. Wisdom Bwalya, delivered a keynote address. In the speech, Bwalya congratulated the graduates and reflected on the vital role that creative professionals play in preserving and promoting Zambia’s cultural heritage.
The theme for this graduation was “The Art of Imagination and Possibility: Shaping a Creative Future.” This theme aligned perfectly with Zambia’s vision for the orange economy. The creative sector is no longer just a platform for artistic expression but a major economic driver, contributing to employment, cultural preservation, and national branding.

Ladies and Gentlemen
It is with great honour and privilege that I stand before you today as we celebrate this remarkable milestone – the first-ever graduation ceremony of Open Window University. This occasion is significant not only for the graduands and their families but also for the nation as a whole, as it marks a step forward in strengthening Zambia’s creative arts sector as part of our broader development agenda.
Allow me to begin by extending my heartfelt congratulations to all the graduands present here today. Your hard work, determination, and perseverance have brought you to this defining moment, and I commend each and every one of you for this outstanding achievement.
Education is a critical pillar in our country’s development, and as the government of the Republic of Zambia, we remain committed to ensuring that every young person has access to quality, inclusive, and relevant education. The President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, firmly believes that education is a social equaliser and a key driver of national development.
It is through education that we can bridge social and economic gaps, empower our youth with the right skills, and create a knowledgeable and innovative workforce that contributes meaningfully to Zambia’s progress.
Our efforts are reflected in the free education policy and the new curriculum framework, which prioritises the creative arts as a fundamental area of study, recognising its immense potential to drive economic diversification and job creation.
Through this curriculum, we are equipping young Zambians with the necessary skills to thrive in industries such as music, film, fashion, digital media, design, and the broader creative economy. These sectors have become key contributors to global economies, and Zambia must harness its vast creative potential to compete on the international stage.

Here in Zambia, we must embrace this shift by creating policies that support creative entrepreneurs, strengthening intellectual property rights, and establishing platforms for local and international collaborations.
I therefore urge the private sector, international partners, and all stakeholders present here today to continue working together with the government in supporting creative education and providing opportunities for our young talent to thrive both locally and globally.

To our dear graduands, today marks the beginning of a new journey. You are stepping into a world that is full of opportunities but also challenges. However, I am confident that the knowledge and skills you have gained at Open Window University will enable you to become pioneers and innovators in the creative space.
I urge you to be bold, to think beyond traditional career paths, and to use your creativity not only to earn a living but also to contribute to national development. Zambia needs storytellers, designers, digital creators, animators, and entrepreneurs who can showcase our rich culture and heritage to the world.
